NEW HAVEN -- Ismael Correa, 28, never thought he would be the type to speak out against injustice, but then again, he never thought he'd be living in a homeless shelter at 645 Grand Ave. watching fellow residents suffer in the cold all day.
Correa organized a march to City Hall Friday, complete with signs, a list of concerns, a few homeless friends in tow and the backing of the group "New Elm City Dream's" youth organization that fights for jobs and economic justice.
And the first time out was a success: they met with the city's Community Services Director Dr. Chisara Asomugha, who listened to their concerns and promised to put issues on the table when the broader network of shelter providers come together, although the city doesn't run the shelters.
Global Poetry Crew is a bilingual syndicate of artists, in all of the literary arts devoted to the mission of expanding a voice of common orderly dissent in areas where civil minded injustices are prevalent. This is done, by engaging in philanthropic efforts to identify and cross examine subjects and specific incidents within the homeless and the incarcerated communities, with the goal to generate change of policies and regulations.
Global Poetry Crew, is formed to be that mouthpiece the people who are Homeless & Incarcerated . This is done through our events and our performances. We continue the endeavor to entertain, as well as educate the general public on issues that deeply affect, the homeless & the incarcerated communities. However, we cannot complete our goals by ourselves. Through the entire community, we hope to raise awareness and provide help to those who need it most.
Think globally, act locally!
